Oh boy... the thought of a trip to the grocery store was overwhelming to me. Of course the food in Florence is incredibly delicious and I love finding a little "bar" or "ristorante" to check out. However, just like anywhere, eating out adds up and gets pricey. Before I ventured out to the "supermercato" I thankfully had some friends and professors give me some great advice.
The most important things to know
"Conad" is the name of the best "go to" store, similar to a Target, on a much smaller scale
Produce - you MUST put on gloves to touch any of the produce, bag what you would like, take it to the scale, weigh it, and print a price sticker
Deli/bakery - take a number
Great place to get toiletries and household items (batteries, lightbulbs, etc)
Also the best place to buy wine/beer/liquor, most other stores charge more
Check out - no grocery bags("borsa"), you must bring your own (which is way smarter if you ask me)

Overall, I LOVED it! It's convenient, I can go as needed on a walk home from school, or a two minute walk down the street to grab something I forgot. So much better than having to make a trip to Harris Teeter or Target.
